In Greek mythology, Actaea was one of the Nereids which were the fifty sea nymphs daughters of the sea god Nereus, who lived in the Aegean sea. She is known as the "Nereid of the sea-shore" and is usually portrayed on a rocky shore watching her dolphin companions.
